Minneapolis Institute of Art

The Minneapolis Institute of Art, often referred to as Mia, was founded in 1883. It is one of the largest art museums in the United States and features over 89,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of world history.

The museum’s diverse collection includes European masters such as Rembrandt and Monet; modern favorites like Picasso and Warhol; Ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian antiquities; Chinese ceramics and paintings; African masks; Native American pottery; photography from all over the globe; contemporary art by both local and international artists; an impressive library with over 100,000 volumes on art history research, including rare books dating back to 1472; a conservation laboratory where visitors can observe how artifacts are restored and preserved; and a state-of-the-art auditorium featuring lectures, symposia, concerts, film screenings, and other events.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts offers free admission to all visitors as well as a variety of educational programs such as school group tours that explore the museum’s collections and special exhibitions. Mia also hosts an array of family programs like art-making activities in the Target Art Studio or guided gallery experiences for families.

In addition to its permanent collection, the museum has regularly changing exhibitions from around the globe which features both classic and contemporary works of art from various cultures. Mia also offers a variety of summer camps for children and adults that explore visual arts, music, theater and more.

MIA is located in the heart of Minneapolis next to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and walking distance from other popular attractions including the Walker Art Center, Mill City Museum, Minnesota History Center, and Guthrie Theater. It is easily accessible by public transportation with nearby parking available as well.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm with extended hours on Thursdays until 9 pm. Admission is always free, with donations encouraged.
