Guthrie Theater

Guthrie Theater, located in downtown Minneapolis on historic Vineland Place, is one of the nation’s leading regional theaters. Founded in 1963 by Sir Tyrone Guthrie and other local theatre artists, its mission is to produce and present the finest classic and contemporary plays for all audiences. The theater has produced hundreds of productions over the years and won numerous awards for excellence including five Tony Awards.

The theater offers a year-round season that features acclaimed classics from both established playwrights as well as emerging talent. Production highlights have included world premieres of August Wilson’s Seven Guitars, Maury Yeston’s Titanic, Lee Blessing’s Cobb, and Lanford Wilson’s Book Of Days. Other acclaimed productions include classics such as Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth; plus new works by Edward Albee, David Mamet, and Harold Pinter.

The main stage theater is housed in a striking modern building that incorporates the original Guthrie Theater from 1963. Inside, the auditorium offers magnificent views of the Minneapolis skyline and seats more than 1,100 people. The theater also includes three additional performance spaces: the McGuire Proscenium Stage (450 seats), Dowling Studio (180 seats), and Wurtele Thrust Stage (255 seats).

In addition to its regular season programming, Guthrie Theater also hosts a series of special events including lectures, artist conversations and play readings throughout each year. The theater also serves as an educational resource, offering classes and camps for all ages in a variety of theatrical disciplines.
